The Open Space and Facility Services Division of The Columbia Association seeks qualified candidates for its Construction Building Mechanic Intern position. This person will perform a variety of construction and maintenance projects as assigned and help maintain the wide variety of commercial/ institutional buildings within CA’s portfolio.Applicants must be part of the Howard County’s Application and Research Laboratory and Construction Management program and apply with a written recommendation from the program administrator. During the school year, the intern is intended to work within the parameters of this program but has the potential for extended employment beyond the school year as a summer intern.

The qualified candidate should have:

  1. Basic knowledge and awareness of construction and maintenance practices including drywall, painting, framing, doors, trim, flooring, minor plumbing and minor electrical.

  2. Basic knowledge of construction terminology

  3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and public safety precautions involved in construction operations.

  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors and members of the public.

  5. Must have a valid class C Maryland driver’s license with a good driving record.

  6. Must be able to read, interpret and understand drawings and satisfactorily apply them to the working conditions and specifications.

7.Must be able to use a computer and smartphone.

8.May be subject to drug testing and background investigation.


During the school year, the internship hours will be 12-3 pm, three (3) days per week subject to coordination with Howard County’s Application and Research Laboratory and Construction Program Manager. Summer internship hours will vary and be set by the supervisor.
