Engineer VI - Computing and Signal Processing Hardware Architect/Designer
Located in Malibu, California, HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Contribute to and lead elements of research and development efforts aimed at producing novel computing and signal processing architectures and hardware implementations optimized for challenging processing problems. Primary emphasis is on embedded computing solutions in which size, weight, and power (SWAP) are significantly constrained, but secondary emphasis on highly efficient scalable parallel platforms. Employ a mixture of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) processing elements (e.g. GPUs, FPGAs, CPUs, microcontrollers, etc.), traditional customized solutions (e.g. customized digital ASICs with embedded processing cores), and novel components (e.g. neuromorphic processing engines and other such custom co-processors) combined with other system elements (e.g. memory, I/O, storage, power delivery, etc.) to address targeted applications. Survey underserved application spaces and propose novel architectures / components to address them. Perform theory-driven analyses of candidate approaches. Participate in and lead organization and management of research and development projects to be carried out by broader technical teams including subject matter experts in other domains (e.g. digital and mixed signal circuit design, machine learning algorithms, high speed test and measurement, packaging and integration, device physics). Work collaboratively with other team members; provide mentorship and guidance to others in some aspects of these projects (technical, organization, reporting, etc.). Develop and maintain relationships with relevant vendors and partner organizations. Organize and present results, in written reports, journal papers, and oral presentations. Create and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines and technical expectations. Lead and contribute to proposal and marketing efforts required to sustain continued R&D efforts.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: More than 12 years of experience in performing design, architecture, and analysis efforts such as those described above. More than 12 years of experience with development of computing and signal processing hardware implementations, and characterizing / benchmarking these solutions. More than 5 years of experience participating in organization and leadership of technical research and development efforts, and in preparing presentations and proposals needed to attract research funding. Familiarity with related commercial packaging technology (e.g. ceramic and laminate chip-level packages, printed circuit boards, interposers, etc.) and integrated circuit processing and integration techniques.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Thorough knowledge of traditional and unconventional computing architectures, including tradeoffs in multi-core/node memory/processing partitioning and interconnect fabric topologies (e.g. all-all, mesh, hypercube, etc.). Deep understanding of available commercial components (e.g. various processor options, memory, storage, clocking, high speed optical and electrical links, etc.) and associated relevant metrics (e.g. SerDes energy efficiency in pJ/bit). Broad knowledge of emerging computing architectures / components (e.g. neuromorphic processors and other bio-mimetics). Broad knowledge of associated memory technologies, both traditional/COTS (e.g. DRAM, SRAM, Flash) and emerging / leading edge (e.g. Hybrid Memory Cube, 3D XPoint). Understanding of architectural tradeoffs between different available solutions relative to application spaces (e.g. DSP, image recognition and classification, structured (e.g. band diagonal) and random sparse matrix methods, graph analytics, etc.).
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency in use of computers, engineering work stations, complex electronic equipment, oral and written communication, interaction with vendors/colleagues and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work well in a team and independently. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within confined spaces and have both visual and hearing acuity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Active SSBI is a plus.
HRL offers a very competitive compensation and benefits package. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401K match, gym facilities, PTO, growth potential, and an exciting and challenging work environment.
