Located in Malibu, California, HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
We are seeking a talented Photonics Engineer / Photonics Scientist.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Develop and execute creative R&D projects involving novel semiconductor based optical and electronic devices, components, and heterogeneously integrated systems-on-a-chip for next-generation commercial and military applications. Conduct detailed theoretical analysis, modeling and design of photonic device and systems. Oversee materials growth, device and circuit fabrication, and component packaging. Work with staff to develop photonic and microwave photonic testbeds for evaluating device and system performance. Perform optical and electrical testing, project budgeting and scheduling, and presentations to internal and external customers. Must be able to work well in a creative team environment and possess excellent communication skills. Collect, analyze, and report on experimental data internally and to external customers. Must be able to give technical presentations and write technical proposals.
Extensive experience with multi-physics simulation (both device and optical system), computer-aided design and layout, micro/nano fabrication, and test. Experience with free space optics, fiber optics, and microwave photonic systems design and experiments (optical sources and detectors, free-space optics, optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, fiber splicers, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, high speed oscilloscopes). Experience engineering quantum nonlinear photonic systems, e.g. entanglement sources and single-photon counting. Hands-on fabrication and processing experience of semiconductor materials for photonic devices, i.e. Si, GaAs, InP, InGaAs, InGaAsP, GaN, AlGaN, and lithium niobate, including associated dielectrics and metals. Experience in using semiconductor processing tools such as ICP Etchers, PECVD systems, photolithography systems, electroplating baths, and semiconductor characterization tools, such as SEMs, ellipsometers, optical microscopes, profilometers, and semiconductor parameter analyzers. Experience with data acquisition tools using LabVIEW and Matlab. Test fixture design experience using CAD tools, such as AutoCAD and Inventor. Must have authored scientific publications and given technical presentations.
In-depth knowledge of photonic device design, modeling, fabrication, and testing. Solid knowledge of optoelectronic device physics, including ability to relate basic material and physical characteristics to device performance is essential. Detailed understanding of free-space optics, guided-wave optics, micro-optics, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), sub-wavelength optics, quantum optics and photonic crystals. In-depth knowledge of optical components and optical bench-top assemblies, as well as of microwave components and assemblies. Knowledge of optical lens design and microlens design. Strong desire to learn new technologies and flexibility to change from one project to another quickly.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Able to work safely within a class 10 cleanroom as well as in RF and optical testing laboratories. Able to work safely with and around toxic and potentially hazardous materials.
PhD in electrical engineering, physics, optical engineering, or related discipline, or MS with minimum 2 years of relevant job experience is required. Photonic integrated circuits and systems specialization is preferred. Previous internship/job experience in photonics and photonic systems design and test is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license special tools or restrictions): U.S. citizenship required. Security clearance or ability to obtain a security clearance is required.
HRL offers a very competitive compensation and benefits package. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401K match, gym facilities, PTO, growth potential, and an exciting and challenging work environment.
