Engineer II – Stress Analysis Engineer

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: You will be a part of a diverse team of engineers and scientists, where you will use finite element codes, analytic solutions and mechanics insight to help solve challenging questions at the frontiers of structural and materials research. In this role, you will apply your strong foundation in solid mechanics and numerical analysis to model the stress within structural, mechanical and electronic systems, identify failure mechanisms, model testing and processing fixtures, optimize system architectures, and brainstorm new designs. The ideal candidate will have excellent engineering fundaments, the initiative to identify technical problems and the creativity to generate novel resolutions. Responsibilities will include:
Perform finite element (FE) modeling and simulation using Abaqus
Perform non-linear FE simulations
Analyze thermal stresses
Interpret FE results to identify potential failure
Examine experimental data in light of numerical results
Generate reduced order models capturing salient phenomena
Create new designs to increase performance and resolve technical problems
Develop new simulation tools as needed
Create CAD models using SolidWorks
Summarize key findings in written documents and slides
As a Stress Analysis Engineer, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of materials, structures and devices, with current projects spanning from formulating new materials for additive manufacturing to structure optimization for hypersonic vehicles. Opportunities abound for a self-driven and creative Stress Analysis Engineer to grow within our group. With more experience, the candidate can grow into the role of a modeling expert supporting multiple projects with responsibilities including: writing patents, journal publications and proposals, and eventually managing research projects.
The candidate must have experience with Finite Element Analysis beyond coursework. The candidate should show demonstrated experience in debugging and trouble-shooting numerical simulations. Experience running non-linear, dynamic implicit/explicit simulations, with damage and failure is desired, as well as experience with automation routines. Design experience is highly desired. Experience with electronic band structure modeling is a plus. Experimental laboratory experience is a plus. The ideal candidate has creative problem solving skills, hands-on experience, and the ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently.
Knowledge of FEA and CAD is required. Knowledge of Abaqus and Solidworks software is highly desired. Knowledge of Python and other programming languages is desired. An understanding of brittle fracture is desired. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are required.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Have visual and hearing acuity, manual dexterity and good verbal and written skills. Ability to work independently is required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license special tools or restrictions): U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required. Ability to obtain a security clearance is a plus.
