Located in Malibu, California, HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.

Essential job functions:

  • Candidate must be able to conceptualize, lead and drive creative research and development projects involving infrared detectors and focal planes based on epitaxial growth of III-V compound semiconductors.

  • As a member of HRL technical staff, the candidate will design and execute experiments, analyze results and disseminate information effectively through discussion, reports and presentations.

  • Candidate must be willing to take both a hands-on approach to lab work as well as a supervisory role when necessary in team efforts.

  • The ideal candidate would be capable of performing innovative infrared detector research and development involving detector design, new materials/epitaxial structures, or novel fabrication schemes that result in focal-plane demonstration.

  • The candidate will also play a lead role in molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) growth system maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades.

Experience desired:

  • The ideal candidate for this position has 1-3 years of post-graduate experience in semiconductor device design, fabrication, or test, preferably on infrared detector materials.  Experience and capability in epitaxial growth of III-V compound semiconductors by MBE and experience with thin-film characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, AFM, and SIMS is required.

  • Candidate must have authored scientific publications and given technical presentations. Experience with data analysis software such as Matlab, Mathematica, Igor, or JMP is required.

Knowledge desired:

  • In-depth knowledge of infrared detector device design, semiconductor device physics and material growth techniques, as well as the ability to relate basic material and physical characteristics to device performance is essential.

  • Strong knowledge of design of experiment techniques and of statistical methods for analyzing and correlating experimental data with measured data is desirable.

  • Familiarity with IR detector processing, testing of discrete detectors, and basic radiometry test protocols is a plus.

Essential Physical/Mental requirements:

  • Must be able to work safely in laboratory settings including semiconductor processing and materials growth areas and clean room facilities.

  • Proficiency in the use of computers, engineering work stations, and common electronic test equipment is required.

  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing is necessary to facilitate interaction with customers and colleagues.

Education desired:

Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or similar field with an emphasis on semiconductor device design and development.

Special requirements: U.S. citizenship required. Ability to obtain/maintain security clearances (post-start) is a plus.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
