Engineer V - Detector Research Scientist

Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemistry, or similar field with an emphasis on semiconductor opto-electronics devices.
Essential job functions:
The Electro-Optical (EO) Device Technologies Group of the Sensor and Electronics Lab at HRL Laboratories is a highly talented team of scientists and engineers performing pioneering work on advanced materials and device technologies for commercial and government applications in an innovative research and development environment. The candidate must be able to conceptualize, lead and drive creative research and development on the next generation of infrared detector technology. The research can span from novel device design and innovative materials to advanced fabrication and integration scheme for focal plane array and camera demonstration. The candidate is also encouraged to support and collaborate on a broad spectrum of EO/IR research: integrated photonics, LIDAR, optical materials, and optical quantum sensing and communication. Other essential job functions include: (1) Provide mentorship and guidance to others in all aspects of these projects (technical, organization, reporting, etc.), (2) Develop and maintain relationships with relevant customers, vendors and partner organizations, (3) Organize and present results, in written reports, journal papers, and oral presentations, (4) Create and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines and technical expectations, and (5) Lead and contribute to proposal and marketing efforts required to sustain continued R&D efforts.
The ideal candidate for this position has 3-10 years of post-graduate experience in optoelectronic/ photonic device design, growth, fabrication, or test. Experience in infrared detector research and development is a plus.Candidate must have authored scientific publications and given technical presentations. Experience with data analysis software such as Matlab, Mathematica, Igor, or JMP is required. Strong technical writing, proposal, presentation, and general communication skills are desired.
In-depth knowledge of EO/IR materials and device technology, especially infrared detector device design is desired. Deep understanding of semiconductor device physics, including the ability to relate basic material and physical characteristics to device performance, is essential. Strong desire to learn new technologies and flexibility to change from one project to another quickly.
Essential Physical/Mental requirements:
Must be able to work safely in laboratory settings including semiconductor processing and materials growth areas and clean room facilities.Proficiency in the use of computers, engineering work stations, and common electronic test equipment is required.Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing is necessary to facilitate interaction with customers and colleagues.
U.S. person status (U.S. citizenship or permanent resident) is required.
