Optomechanical Engineer I

EDUCATION DESIRED: BS in electrical engineering, physics, optical engineering, mechanical engineering or related disciplines, with photonic or optical coursework and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience. Knowledge of CAD tools is essential. Understanding of machine shop practices is essential.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Work with staff scientists to develop optomechanical test setups. Design test fixtures and work with machine shop for fabrication and assembly. Ability to perform microfabrication tasks including thin-film deposition, etching, electroplating etc. Collect, analyze, and report on experimental data and provide test documentation and reports to team members. Communicate with vendors for off-the-shelf and custom parts based upon specified requirements. Strong desire to learn new technologies and flexibility to change from one project to another quickly. Capable of working independently as well as within cross-functional teams.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: Experience with optomechanical lab components, optical assemblies, and 2D and 3D CAD is required. Working knowledge of thermal modeling of assemblies is desired. Working knowledge of integrated optics, free space optics, micro-optics, fiber optics, and microwave photonics test equipment (optical sources and detectors, optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, fiber splicers, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, high speed oscilloscopes) a plus. Experience with microfabrication including thin-film deposition, etching, electroplating etc. a plus
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Undergraduate level standard electrical engineering coursework (electromagnetics, circuits, devices, photonics, etc.) is desired. Working knowledge of optical components, optical bench-top assemblies, and optical device packaging is required. Data acquisition techniques using LabVIEW or Matlab is a plus. Test fixture design using CAD tools, such as AutoCAD, Inventor, or Mentor Graphics is preferred.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work safely in optical and microwave testing laboratories. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and organization skills are required. Must work closely with staff scientists and program managers as integral part of R&D teams. Must be proficient in use of computers, engineering work stations, and complex optical and electronic equipment. Must be able to interact with customers/colleagues and enjoy working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
