Internship in Quantum Materials Processing

HRL's internship program is designed to provide students with valuable hands-on technical experience working with some of the world's leading experts in their fields. By collaboratively working with HRL researchers, interns gain valuable professional work experience and greater insight into a research career at the scenic Malibu laboratory. You'll also get a feel for our unique culture and commitment to technical achievement and excellence. The start and end time of this position is flexible, and not constrained to the summer.

Education Desired:

Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate Degree in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.


Essential Job Functions:

Design, build, perform, and analyze experiments for new processing techniques on solid-state thin film materials for advanced integrated quantum photonics. We are looking for motivated candidates interested in prototyping wet etching apparatus, optimizing chemistry processes, and characterization in the laboratory. Requires frequent technical communication with team members, including oral and written reporting.


Experience and Knowledge Desired:

Background in one or more of the following areas: electrochemistry, device fabrication, solid-semiconductor physics, optical engineering, optical spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy. Ability to independently plan, quickly iterate new experiments, and persist when faced with difficult problems. Knowledge of solid-state physics, statistical and data analysis, and computer programming for automated data acquisition are also a plus.


Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:

Excellent problem solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced heterogeneous team environment. Ability to spend extended periods of time at a computer monitor. Able to solve problems on your own and proactively identify the path forward.

Special Requirements:

Candidate must be a US person is required.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. ยง 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Selected candidates will be hired through a temporary agency and subject to the agency's pre-employment substance abuse testing.
