Job Summary

The Research Finance Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the Research Finance Department, including people, processes and relationships.  Leading a team of dedicated professionals, the Research Finance Manager ensures timely and accurate post-award accounting and reporting of grant, contract and other Institutional research funds, in compliance with federal, state and local regulations and funder stipulations and requirements. The increasingly complex rules and regulations governing grants and contracts requires the Research Finance Manager to have a strong and thorough knowledge of federal (2 CFR 200)  and other non-federal regulations, an understand of proper accounting for direct and indirect costs and be able to interpret and implement new award terms and conditions. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with excellent oral and written communication skills, capable of presenting complex financial information in a clear and concise manner and providing labs with tools and reports necessary to assist labs with financial decisions. This position is also responsible for managing the annual Uniform Guidance Single Audit.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Establishes, cultivates and manages relationships with Principal Investigators (PI) and lab staff to ensure effective and open communication between administration and scientific departments
  • Manages significant and complex PI portfolio's, including the Institute President/Chief Scientific Officer, reviewing all funding availability and expenditures, ensuring costs are allowable, reasonable, and allocable
  • Consults with PI’s and lab staff on all matters related to financial management
  • Ensures lab forecasts are accurate prior to presentation to PI
  • Ensures all awards are made available for expenditures on a timely basis
  • Communicates closing grants with labs and related parties and ensures grants are closed in a timely manner
  • Reviews and posts research budgets in ERP system


Administrative & Compliance

  • Interprets and applies federal, state, and local regulations as they relate to grant funding and expenditures
  • Develops and updates policies and procedures related to grants and the research finance department
  • Continually assesses processes and efficiency within the research finance department and suggests improvements
  • Responsibility for preparing annual budget for research finance department
  • Responsible for revenue recognition for all grants
  • Ensures all grant related reporting is completed in a timely manner
  • Reviews and posts research finance staff journal entries, draw down requests and grant related invoices
  • Liaisons with the Office of Sponsored Research on budget, submittals, and inquiries
  • Works with PI’s to ensure that effort certifications are approved in a timely manner
  • Manages the Single Audit in conjunction with the Controller, including the preparation of the Schedule Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA) and other audit schedules
  • Partners and coordinates with Controller on monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities
  • Works with the CFO and other directors on ad hoc projects
  • Prepare the Summary Report of Expenditures Adjustment Sheet (SROEAS)
  • Assists with selection and implementation of technology and software utilized within the research finance department and the institute as a whole
  • Maintains discretion for confidential information and appropriately handles critical information and sensitive situations


·      Supervises and mentor staff by holding one on one and departmental meetings

·      Responsible for hiring, promoting, training, and developing staff and new hires

·      Responsible for Performance Management of team

Leveling Requirements
B.S. / B.A in a related field with 4 or more years of relevant experience required. Experience managing people. Exceptional computer skills required, including Excel and Word. Must have excellent organizational skills and communicate effectively with others. Working knowledge of GAAP required. Federal and non-federal grant administration experience required. Ability to work remotely as required
