The Organization:
Project HOME, established in 1989, is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides housing, opportunities for employment, medical care and education to homeless and lowincome persons living in the Philadelphia area. The mission of the Project HOME community is to empower adults, children, and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, to alleviate the underlying causes of poverty, and to enable all of us to attain our fullest potential as individuals and as members of the broader society. The work of Project HOME is rooted in a belief in "the dignity of each person" and "the transformational power of building relationships and community". Project HOME is a vision-centered organization that believes "none of us are home until all of us are home".
Project HOME achieves its mission through a continuum of services comprised of street outreach, a range of supportive housing, and comprehensive services. It addresses the root causes of homelessness through neighborhood-based affordable housing, economic development, and environmental enhancement programs, as well as through providing access to employment opportunities; adult and youth education; and healthcare. Project HOME is committed to social and political advocacy. An integral part of its work is education about the realities of homelessness and poverty and vigorous advocacy on behalf of and with homeless and low-income persons for more just and humane public policies. The organization is committed to nurturing a spirit of community among persons from all walks of life, all of whom have a role to play in making this a more just and compassionate society.
Project HOME's work has been recognized as a model for ending homelessness by news organizations across the country including The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Denver Post, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. The U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development has stated that the work of the founder Sister Mary Scullion in Philadelphia exemplifies supportive housing as a good investment more "than anywhere else in the country".  Co-founders Sister Mary Scullion and Joan Dawson McConnon received The University of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal in 2011. Sister Mary Scullion was named one of Time magazine's World's 100 Most Influential People in 2009.
