Associate Actuary Manager - Personal Lines

Our Personal Lines Actuarial department is seeking an Associate Actuarial Manager to join our growing team in Worcester, MA Corporate Headquarters. 


Position summary:

Has direct responsibility for managing a group of students and/or actuarial support staff and accountability for modeling and pricing framework for one or more personal lines of business. Responsible for managing day to day work flow. Provides technical oversight and guidance. Takes a lead role on actuarial projects.  Employs new techniques depending on project requirements. Presents results and recommended actions consistent with the business strategy of the organization.


This is a Full-time, Exempt role.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:


  • Collaborates with others to identify and solve business problems and takes a lead role in working with PL Product for their line(s) of business.

  • Leads meetings, able to influence business partners and articulate findings.

  • Able to take lead in understanding line of business data and work with Azure and Data Science/Data Analytics to add or access additional internal data as appropriate and identify root causes behind trends.

  • Recommends improvements to ratemaking processes, oversees countrywide GLM pricing model development and factor adjustments for individual states during rollouts.  Engages business partners including but not limited to State Management, State Pricing, Product, Underwriting, Data Science and Claim in identifying loss cost drivers and rating variables throughout the modeling process for both buy-in and understanding of the pricing models.

  • Performs projects/analyses that require knowledge of advanced actuarial concepts/methods and/or advanced analytic approaches.

  • Oversees the preparation of necessary systems specifications for semi-annual or annual line of business pricing model releases.

  • Accountable for responding to general insurance department inquiries regarding the pricing models.

  • Takes initiative to ensure compliance with various state and federal regulations.

  • Develop and maintain tools for monitoring model/pricing performance on both a countrywide and state basis at a rating and tier variable basis to ensure continuous improvement in pricing accuracy.

  • Responsible for communicating results/issues to upper level management.

  • Provides coaching to team on standard practices and development of core actuarial & problem solving techniques and developing business acumen of direct reports.

  • Develops leadership skills, motivates and oversees direct reports' work product and daily workload and adjusts priorities as necessary balancing quality and timeliness in work product deliverables.

  • Responsible for performance and compensation management for direct reports.

  • May lead or participate in community recruiting and/or training activities.


Position Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Five or more years of technical experience in multiple LOB and/or actuarial disciplines such as pricing, reserving or predictive modeling.

  • Lead or supervisory experience preferred.

  • ACAS Designation or higher, or equivalent work experience.  Pursuit of FCAS professional designation preferred. 
  • Possesses a detailed understanding of actuarial concepts/methods and the ability to research and employ new techniques depending on project requirements.

  • Advanced skills using Microsoft Office, including Excel.

  • Intermediate programming skills, including the ability to develop and automate processes.

  • Ability to multitask and meet all deadlines with quality product.

  • May design and provide training curriculum for student program.

  • Able to direct activities of others, motivate and develop staff.
