Associate Village Parent
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job openings for Associate Village Parents for Children’s Village, located in St. Petersburg, Florida.
To provide stable respite care to foster children at assigned Children’s Village home during the absence of the regular Children’s Village Parent. Works closely with the regular Village Parent and professional staff to continue to ensure the educational, medical and emotional treatment needs of the children are met; respects the religious and cultural background of each child. Follows through and implements the established schedule and routine developed by the Children’s Village Parent for a safe, healthy, comfortable home environment. Maintains the confidentiality of the children placed in the Village home. This person may be called upon to cover any home during holidays, sick leave, and vacation times.
Provides for the continuation of a safe comfortable home environment for the children in the assigned Children’s Village home; follows the rules and plans established by the Village Parent; provides for the educational, moral and spiritual development of all children through planned activities, informal communication and role modeled behavior.
Prepares meals, purchases food when necessary; promotes family mealtime skills and conversation; teaches good nutritional habits and makes nutritional foods available to the children. Provides a home environment that teaches and models the appropriate skills and behaviors necessary to develop healthy relationships with family members and others.
Assists with maintaining the cleanliness and order of the home. Ensures the implementation of established routines and schedules for orderly, safe, clean operation of the household; reports any maintenance issues to the appropriate personal for timely repair.
Monitors school attendance and progress; records special needs and accomplishments.
Provides transportation, in Salvation Army vehicles, to school, activities and appointments. Provides emotional support and nurturing for the physical, emotional and mental health needs of each child. Documents on daily logs, medication logs and visitation logs. Follows established procedures of documenting incident reports.
Supports the culture and customs of each child. Disciplines following the policies and procedures outlined for the Children’s Village; disciplines according to appropriate consequences for actions.
Acts as liaison and advocate for the children with outside agencies, schools, service, and health providers to ensure the best interests of the children are maintained when necessary. Attends appropriate Children’s Village administrative and program related meetings.
Keeps supervisor informed of activities, pertinent issues, upcoming events and potential problems; follows established guidelines for reporting of incidents and suspected abuse or neglect. Maintains confidentiality of children’s information at all times; reports breaches of confidentiality to supervisor.
Works as a team member, supporting co-workers in positive ways to achieve the goals of the program and organization. Maintains confidentiality of client information at all times. Reports breaches of confidentiality to supervisor. Other duties as assigned by the Program Director
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge or willingness to learn child development and behavior. Must be empathetic to children who may have experienced abuse and neglect situations in their lives. Knowledge of practical safe childcare practices, including CPR and First Aide, which continues to offer a safe environment. Knowledge of behavior management techniques that enable the child to learn from his or her behavior while maintaining dignity and a positive sense of well-being. Ability to model and teach daily life skills and positive methods of communicating with others, which promotes social and life skills. Position requires person to follow the individual plans for children that are developed as needed by Village Parent. Ability to remain organized, to think and operate independently and as part of a team.
Ability to exercise good judgment, make decisions that promote the mission of The Salvation Army, to promote a moral, ethical development of the children in the home. Ability to support and model the Mission of The Salvation Army, committed to investing in a generation of children. Ability to act as a professional advocate for the child in all areas of his or her life while maintaining confidentiality. Ability to be trained to utilize computer and software for documentation and record keeping.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma and/or five years’ experience in working in a foster care or children’s therapeutic care environment.
and/or any equivalent combination of documented training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to live in the Village dwelling and provide care for the children up to twenty-four hours a day on days scheduled to work. Ability to maintain composure and take active steps toward resolving situations without physically harming the child in the process.
Able to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to build and maintain effective caregiver relationships with children.
Ability to plan, develop, facilitate, and supervise recreational, arts and crafts activities for participants. Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and occasional climbing. The activity level is moderate, with times of performing somewhat strenuous daily activities. Ability to drive a vehicle for an extended amount of time, to observe and supervise children to ensure their safety, relate sensitively to people of all ages and varied backgrounds, to operate and answer the telephone in a professional manner.
