Director of Development
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Director of Development for the St. Petersburg Area Command located in St.
Plans, develops, implements, administers, evaluates, and monitors a Direct Fund-Raising
Program targeting an assigned geographical area in support of the Division's
budget and programs under the direction of the Area Commander. Develops and secures funds to reach/surpass fund-raising goals through a variety of financial development vehicles
including: 1) individual gifts and individual donor upgrading, 2) corporate gifts and sponsorships, 3) foundation support for specific programs and projects, 4) government and other grants, and
5) capital campaigns, and special events. Supervises administrative support personnel.
Works directly and independently with local officers, their boards and committees to
develop local promotional plans. Plans and coordinates all public relations activities ensuring compliance with the designated budget. Confers directly with Divisional Headquarters administration and boards as well as with Territorial Headquarters.
Performs short and long-term program planning and develops recommendations for enhancing Financial Development Program effectiveness.
Develops financial development goals for each program and monitors progress to ensure
goals are attained.
Solicits donations and cultivates relationships with donors to develop, secure, and maintain new income sources for present and long-term financial support.
Ensures that all requests from donors and potential donors for information and clarification are responded to in an accurate, timely, and professional manner.
Evaluates fund-raising efforts and establishes methods and measures for monitoring to ensure that fund-raising goals are being met and/or surpassed and
Plans,develops, and initiates a fund-raising strategy to develop corporate gifts and sponsorships to identify potential prospects for major gifts as well as foundation support for The Salvation Army. Cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with corporate officials.
Develops and coordinates the operation of fund-raising appeals identifying new and inventive methods of increasing direct mail appeals.
Maintains awareness of current government legislation and publications to identify
special funding available through government grants. Obtains and completes grant applications to acquire funds; reviews and monitors grants to ensure compliance with government regulations.
Plans,develops, coordinates and monitors all details associated with the production of fund-raising special events and campaigns. Plans event procedures and fund-raising goals and recruits, motivates, and instructs volunteers and staff.
Plans, coordinates, and gives oversight to all public relations staff as necessary to promote and conduct fund raising programs developing printed materials such as brochures, flyers, posters, etc. and coordinates special mass mailings to the general public, prospects, and donors.
Coordinates media advertisements including local television, radio and newspaper coverage ensuring that the image is compliant with The Salvation Army standards and mission. Evaluates appropriateness and effectiveness of public relations efforts.
Researches and analyzes the local market by conducting surveys and studies of the assigned
geographical area to obtain and maintain awareness of the geographic and socio-economic characteristics to determines appropriate fund- raising vehicles.
Works with the Area Commander, the Corps Officers, the Advisory Board and its
committees to develop local promotional plans; conducts presentations to the
Establishes and maintains an organized and efficient donor record-keeping system ensuring
that accurate and complete records are prepared and maintained for each donor.
Develops the annual Financial Development Program budget and prepares regular financial reports illustrating financial development progress.
Works on a continuing basis with the Divisional Financial Development Director to develop
an annual Area Command Fund Raising Plan, refine and evaluate fund raising strategies and communications, and to ensure compliance with The Salvation Army policies and procedures as well as local, state, and federal rules and regulations governing charitable solicitation.
Maintains an effective working relationship with the Planned Giving Fund-Raising Staff and
Divisional Resource Development Director by referring leads and sharing information that may enhance the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the divisional fund-raising efforts.
Maintains a working knowledge of the Territorial Financial Development and Fund Raising
Manual ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the same by promptly inserting updated materials and new sections of the Manual as received from Territorial Headquarters.
Attends and participates in annual Development Conferences. Maintains up-to-date awareness of the latest fund-raising ideas and incorporates them into the Area Command’s fund-raising plans and
Works with the Development Committee, the Community Relations Committee and the Nominating
Committee of the Advisory Board to plan and coordinate fund-raising strategies; reviews recommendations and reports; prepares minutes of committee meetings; prepares quarterly reports on development activities and results within the Area Command.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration,
Marketing or a related field with specialized training in Fund Raising Management highly desirable.
Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in fund raising and fund-raising management or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Valid State Driver's License, an acceptable driving record and auto insurance coverage
as required by TSA Minute 65.
National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE) Certification as Certified Fund Raising
Executive (CFRE) is desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to travel locally and throughout assigned geographical area as necessary to work with local unit program leadership, potential donors, donors and professionals of their communities. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to understand and manage budgets and financial matters.
Work is performed in a normal office environment with some exposure to outdoor temperatures and physical discomforts associated with traveling by vehicle and/or airplane.
